Q. How can I get cast in local
plays?
A. Learn the basics of acting and
how to audition properly. Have well-timed monologues that
are age and personality appropriate. Know how to become more
effective in cold scene readings. Also be aware of proper
dress and stage manners before auditioning.
Q. How successful have past
and present Actors Workshop students been?
A. Very successful. In 2001, 19
actors who trained in the Actors Workshop were cast in plays,
7 appeared in commercials and 25 in independent films.
Q. Do you have to sign a contract
or pay a binding fee to join the Actors Workshop?
A. No. There is no contract and
no fee. Any individual 16 years or older may attend the first
night free. After that it is only $20 per session to attend.
You may attend sessions as regularly as you want.
Q. If I feel I have become a
good actor, what are my chances of making a full-time living?
A. Very slim. If you stay in Indianapolis
it is virtually impossible. If you try New York City or Los
Angeles be prepared to struggle. Luck, connections and good
timing are important ingredients in establishing yourself
as an "employed" actor. Keep your day job! However,
work in local theater and film is very likely if you learn
the basics of acting and proper auditioning techniques.
Q. How long has the Actors Workshop
been in existence?
A. The Actors Workshop was founded
by professional actor Bob Berry in 1990 and has been meeting
on the auditorium stage at the Indianapolis Arts Center since
1995.
